Joseph Pilates
The Pilates Method, originally named Contrology by Joseph Pilates, is based on the principles of breath, alignment, control, precision, flexibility and flow, and was first developed as a rehabilitation program during World War I. As a nurse, Joseph took the springs from the beds of immobilized soldiers, attached them in various positions and helped strengthen and increase flexibility and circulation to the war victims. And thus, the first Cadillac was born! Upon arriving in the U.S. around 1925, and opening a studio in New York with his wife Clara, the biggest following of Pilates proved to be the professional dance and performing arts communities. With the great success he achieved, the program continues to grow in popularity.
